He was a Fellow at the Cambridge Conference on Contemporary Literature at Downing College, Cambridge University and the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference at Middlebury College, Vermont. The Writers’ Union of the Philippines gave him a National Achievement Award in Literature (Gawad Balagtas sa Panitikan) in 2015. He has received fellowships and honours from the Asian Scholarship Foundation, British Council, Fulbright Foundation, and the Don Carlos Palanca Awards for Literature, among others. He was educated at Ateneo de Manila University, University of Stirling, University of the Philippines, and Rutgers University.
